Bitcoin and ethereum prices today, Friday, September 18, 2026: Crypto prices rise as investors move past CLARITY's failure
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) opened at $76,350.68 on Friday, September 18, 2026, 0.3% higher than Thursday's opening price. As of 7:25 a.m. ET this morning, the price of bitcoin lifted to $77,991.09. Ethereum (ETH-USD) opened at $2,445.49 on Friday, September 18, 2026, up 1.2% from Thursday's opening price. The price of ethereum moved up to $2,501.16 as of 7:25 a.m. ET. Bitcoin and ethereum opened this morning in line with the opening prices we have observed all week. However, prices on both bitcoin and ethereum have moved much higher in early trading as investors move past the highly anticipated Fed decision and look onward to new legislation that can help spur the industry forward. The Fed's decision to raise rates for the first time in three years, combined with the ongoing restoration of Saudi Arabia's key East-West pipeline, has eased inflation concerns among investors. And while the failure of the CLARITY Act in the U.S. Senate this week cast a blow to the crypto industry, the CEO at Coinbase believes there's another path forward for crypto investors: "We let politics get in the way, I guess," Armstrong said of the bill in an interview with Yahoo Finance partner the Daily Wolf. He added, "I would just at this point assume it's dead," noting that "there's another path, luckily, with the regulators, the SEC, and the CFTC." Now, your crypto-fueled profit means you have a sweet nest egg to put toward a house. But can you buy a house with crypto rather than using cash or a traditional mortgage loan? What are the roadblocks? And what about taxes? President Trump wants the United States to be "the crypto capital of the world." In that spirit, in late June, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) William J. Pulte ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to "prepare their businesses to count cryptocurrency as an asset for a mortgage." The FHFA supervises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that fund a major portion of the mortgage industry. Pulte said the housing system "needs a massive upgrade," adding, "I want people who own cryptocurrency to be able to buy homes like everyone else. I believe cryptocurrency is an asset. I believe Americans should be able to use their crypto if they want to. It's time the housing system caught up." This signals what could be a fundamental change to how cryptocurrency may be used to qualify for a mortgage. Learn more: Want to buy a house with crypto? Here's what to expect. Bitcoin and ethereum prices opened lower this morning, as they did on Friday, but have moved up in early trading, despite oil prices moving even higher today following reports of attacks in the Middle East over the weekend. An attack on a Saudi Arabian pipeline, as well as on homes and a mosque, has global oil prices (BZ=F) up over 11% in the last five-day period. Expectations that the Fed will raise rates this week have also risen appreciably. This morning, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool, the chances for a rate increase this week are now 86.5%, up from 69.4% on Friday morning. Higher rates will put at least a temporary lid on crypto-price growth. How Bitcoin works Bitcoin is a type of cryptocurrency, which is a currency that exists only in digital form and operates without government or banking oversight. By comparison, the U.S. dollar, the EU euro, the Canadian dollar, and other national currencies have paper versions and are issued by their respective governments. Bitcoin relies on a public digital ledger that validates and records transactions and verifies bitcoin ownership. This ledger is called the blockchain, and it is globally distributed — that is, decentralized — across a broad, worldwide network of servers. Decentralization is a fundamental aspect of cryptocurrencies. Decentralization facilitates peer-to-peer payments with no banking intermediary, enhanced security, and defense against manipulation attempts. Learn more: What is Bitcoin, and how does it work? How to buy Bitcoin in 2026 There are several ways to buy Bitcoin. You can go through a crypto exchange, a fintech app, or a traditional brokerage that will allow you to buy into a bitcoin ETF. Before placing a trade, though, decide what you actually want: full ownership of your bitcoin and private keys — or easy price exposure inside a familiar, regulated system. Whichever avenue you take, it's important to remember that bitcoin remains a high-risk, highly volatile asset compared to many other investments. Prices can surge or drop quickly, sometimes without warning. If you're considering buying bitcoin, assume volatility is part of the deal. Exactly one week ago, the headline news was the same: precious metals and cryptocurrency prices were slipping following fresh escalation between the U.S. and Iran. Attacks from both sides yesterday sent opening bitcoin and ethereum prices to their lowest levels so far this week. With one week to go before the Fed concludes its two-day, rate-setting meeting, oil prices (BZ=F) at $100 a barrel and expectations for a 25-basis-point rate increase are growing. If the fighting between the U.S. and Iran continues this week, keeping oil prices elevated or even pushing them higher, and the Fed raises rates, that is likely to put downward pressure on crypto prices since these risk-based investments do not pay interest. This also applies when you exchange one digital asset for another. Converting bitcoin into ethereum, for example, isn't "just a trade" in the eyes of the IRS. It's a taxable event if the value changes. Crypto taxes aren't paid at the time of the transaction, but instead, they're reported on your tax return for the year in which the transaction took place. So, if you sold crypto for a profit at any point during 2025, that activity is reported when you file your 2025 return in early 2026. How much tax you pay depends on two main factors: How long you held the asset before selling Your overall taxable income and filing status Hold it for less than a year, and you'll usually face higher rates. Hold it longer, and the rates tend to be lower. This holding-period distinction matters more than most people realize. A few days can make a difference of as much as 17% or more — so timing matters.
